Characteristics:
The Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre is housed at Blocks S61 and S62 of the former Whitfield Barracks built in 1910. The barrack blocks are Grade I historic buildings and had once accommodated the Hong Kong Museum of History up to 1998. The Centre has a site area of 4,000 sq m.

The 2 barracks are linked by an extension that houses the lecture hall and thematic exhibition gallery. Glass roofs were installed for the walkways linking the 2 barrack blocks and the extension block, letting in sunlight.

Floors of the verandah were recast with classic tiles, and old-fashion-shaped faucets were installed in the washrooms. An eye-catching feature of the exhibition hall on the ground floor is the pair of brass gates weighing more than 3 tons. They were from the old Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Headquarters, donated by the bank to Antiquities and Monuments Office.

The courtyard between the barracks and the adjacent podium is an ideal setting for garden parties. The outlook of the centre and its location among lush greens of Kowloon Park, the arch-shaped windows and verandah of the barracks are also attractive features of this historic building.
