Characteristics:
Tung Chung Fort is situated in Ha Ling Pei Village on Tung Chung Road. The almost 200 years old building was fortified by a Qing detachment. The walls were built of granite. There are still 6 canons on the north tower. In 1898, when the New Territories were leased to Britain, the fort was evacuated by the Qing authorities. It was once used as a police station. There are a number of single-storey buildings standing on the large area of the fort. They used to be the classrooms of the Public Primary School of Tung Chung. Walking upstairs along the wall, one can find trees and views of Yat Tung Estate in the south. It is a declared monument with an exhibition centre in the fort, run by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, detailing its history.
