Characteristics:
Shek Kwu Chau Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre is located on Shek Kwu Chau Island, 20 minutes by ferry from nearby island Cheung Chau. The centre provides residential treatment and rehabilitation services for male drug abusers of all ages. There is a Roman-style bathing pool enveloped by tiers of colonnades and vaulted-roof corridors with quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Adjacent to the pool is a landscaped courtyard with a central fountain surrounded by dome-shaped clock towers, flowerpots, creepers, grasses, etc. In addition to these ancient Roman features, the centre is also decorated with Chinese architectural features like the gate tower standing near the ferry pier, the Chinese mythical 'Pak Sin' (Eight Immortals) statues standing by the driveway to the pool, colourful drawings illustrating Chinese classical stories on the mural wall and the stage of the assembly hall, etc. The mural is one of Hong Kong's largest outdoor mural paintings, depicting the history of destruction of opium at Humen by Lin Zexu.
