Characteristics:
Ma On Shan Country Park links the Sai Kung Country Park and Lion Rock Country Park to form an extensive recreation area on the Ma On Shan Massif. Apart from a charming, separate section of the park on the Hebe Haven Peninsula, much of the Ma On Shan Country Park is inland. Some high vantage points, however, provide distant vistas of the sea and off-shore islands. Iron mining had long been carried out at Ma On Shan. However, the mine was almost closed in 1981. Concealed mine shafts and man-made slopes are potentially dangerous and the area around the mine should be explored with care. From the top of Ma On Shan, you can see 3 high peaks (about 1,000 m each) - Fu Yung Shan is 19 km to the north; Tai Mo Shan is 13 km to the west and Lantau Peak is 38 km to the southwest.
