Tai O is the largest village on the northwest coast of Lantau Island. It was once a centre of salt export trade to the Mainland. The salt pans have now been converted into fish ponds. The village splits into 2 halves: a mainland section and an island settlement across a narrow creek. The rope-ferry between the 2 settlements is the most remarkable feature of the village. It offers a 20-second crossing on a wooden flat-bottomed boat pulled by 2 villagers. This means of transport has existed here for 50 years and is still in use even though a new pedestrain bridge has been built. Filming in sampans for a longer crossing or going up the creek is negotiable. Prior approval of the Marine Department is required for filming at navigable waterways.
